African Botanics Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish applied to skin — gentle yet effective facial scrub suitable for sensitive, oily, and blemish-prone skin

What is the Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish?

A dual-action facial polish that combines physical and enzymatic exfoliation in a single formula. Sun-dried Buchu leaf and crushed Baobab fruit from the southern tip of Africa are merged with Papaya and Pineapple Enzymes, Lactobionic Acid, Micro-Algae, and fine granules of ancient volcanic minerals. It exfoliates, brightens, refines texture, and purifies — without the irritation or over-stripping that conventional scrubs cause. Vegan and cruelty-free. Made in South Africa.

What is the difference between physical and enzymatic exfoliation — and why does this formula use both?

Physical exfoliation uses mechanical action — fine particles rolling over skin to lift dead cells from the surface. Enzymatic exfoliation uses active compounds — fruit enzymes and acids — to dissolve the bonds holding dead cells in place, working at a cellular level that physical exfoliation cannot reach alone. Used in combination, they address the epidermis from two angles simultaneously: the physical granules refine and buff, while the enzymes clarify and resurface beneath. The result is a depth and completeness of exfoliation that neither method achieves in isolation.

What does it do?

It removes the accumulation of dead skin cells that dulls complexion and congests pores — revealing the fresher, brighter skin underneath. Lactobionic Acid resurfaces and brightens. Papaya and Pineapple Enzymes exfoliate and clarify. Micro-Algae brightens and refines. Baobab Fruit targets discoloration. Kigelia and Rooibos firm and reduce redness. Aloe Ferox hydrates and supports collagen. Marula Oil soothes and nourishes throughout. Skin is left immaculately clean, visibly smoother, and genuinely radiant — not stripped or sensitized.

What is Buchu and why is it in this formula?

Buchu — Agathosma betulina — is an aromatic medicinal plant indigenous to the southern tip of South Africa, used for centuries in the region for its powerful anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. In this formula, sun-dried Buchu leaf powder provides gentle physical exfoliation while simultaneously soothing reactive and blemish-prone skin — making it uniquely suited to the dual role of resurfacing without irritating. It is the ingredient that gives this polish its name and its character.

What is Lactobionic Acid and how does it differ from other exfoliating acids?

Lactobionic Acid is a Polyhydroxy Acid — a PHA — derived from sugar. PHAs are the gentlest category of exfoliating acids, working more slowly and superficially than AHAs like Glycolic Acid, which makes them exceptionally well-tolerated by sensitive and reactive skin. In this formula, Lactobionic Acid provides the chemical exfoliation component — resurfacing, brightening, and promoting cellular renewal — while causing significantly less sensitivity or irritation than conventional acids. It is suitable for use on skin that cannot tolerate stronger chemical exfoliants.

How do I use it — and does it matter whether my skin is wet or dry?

It matters significantly. Apply to wet skin for a gentler exfoliation — the water dilutes the active concentration and the granules glide more smoothly. Apply to dry skin for a more intensive resurfacing — the actives are at full concentration and the mechanical exfoliation is more thorough. Massage gently in circular motions over face, neck, and décolletage for one to two minutes, then leave for two to three minutes to allow the enzymes to activate. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.

Can I use it as a mask or peel?

Yes — for sensitive skin, apply a thin layer and leave for five minutes as an enzyme mask rather than massaging. The enzymes continue working after application, delivering a gentler but still effective exfoliation without the mechanical action. For an enhanced treatment, mix a small amount with the Baobab Clay Oxygenating Cleanser before applying — this extends the mask's clarifying and purifying benefits.

Where does it sit in the African Botanics cleansing ritual?

The Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish is the second step — used after your primary cleanse. Begin with the Pure Marula Cleansing Oil to dissolve makeup, SPF, and surface impurities. Follow with the Enzyme Polish as your exfoliating second step to resurface, clarify, and refine. Alternatively, use after the Baobab Clay Oxygenating Cleanser or the Commiphora Face Cleanser on evenings when you are not wearing makeup. The cleaner the canvas, the more effectively the enzymes and actives perform.

How often should I use it?

As often as your skin needs — from two to three times per week for normal and oily skin, to once weekly for dry or sensitive skin. The formula is gentle enough for frequent use without over-exfoliating, but skin that is compromised, newly sensitized, or actively breaking out should begin with once weekly and build gradually.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

Yes — with the right approach. The Buchu Leaf soothes reactivity, Lactobionic Acid is the gentlest exfoliating acid available, and Honey provides antibacterial and humectant properties that protect the barrier during exfoliation. For sensitive skin specifically, use on wet skin rather than dry, apply as a mask rather than a scrub, and limit to once per week. The formula has been specifically designed to deliver effective exfoliation without the irritation that conventional physical scrubs cause.

Is it suitable for oily and blemish-prone skin?

Particularly well-suited. Buchu Leaf soothes blemish-prone skin. Tea Tree calms active blemishes. Bergamot helps balance conditions including acne and congestion. The physical exfoliation clears pores. The enzymatic layer prevents the buildup of dead cells that contributes to breakouts. Used two to three times per week it visibly reduces congestion and improves overall skin clarity over time.

Does it contain fragrance or essential oils?

The aromatherapy blend of Bergamot, Rose Geranium, and Tea Tree is chosen for active benefit — Bergamot balances skin conditions including acne and congestion, Rose Geranium soothes and balances, Tea Tree calms blemishes. The scent is fresh Bergamot and herbaceous — present but not perfumed. Patch test if you have a known essential oil sensitivity.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

The formula contains Lactobionic Acid and essential oils including Bergamot. As with any active skincare product, consult your physician before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Is it vegan and cruelty-free?

Yes. 100% vegan and cruelty-free, made with ethically and responsibly sourced South African botanicals. Formulated and manufactured in South Africa.

How long does 100ml last?

With two to three uses per week using a small amount per application, 100ml typically lasts three to four months.
